I saw her in the woods one beautiful fall day. The elegant albino doe, placidly chewing on some grass while I filmed her. She is famous in these parts. Because to me, this precious sight is as rare as a blue moon.

Northwoods reflections are an endless source of inspiration. Loons are one of the finest treasures of the Northwoods. To happen upon a loon’s nest while drifting along the shoreline by kayak is a rare treat. In a cove on the edge of Big Island on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage is a hidden passage to a lake inside the island. If you’re lucky enough to find it, you can paddle around its donut-shaped string bog, like a moat, marveling at the exotic plants, turtles and birds. The surrounding pines make this sacred place mysteriously still and quiet. The light is always incredible. I just recently discovered the waterfalls of the Porcupine Mountains, and fell in LOVE with the Manabezho Falls, which reminds me of a miniature Niagara Falls. Only an hour away, I plan to revisit and repaint this river in all of the seasons.

Upon this dock one evening at sunset, a young man proposed to his future bride, and she said yes. This painting was created as a wedding gift to the couple as a memory of the beginning of their life together. Anyone familiar with the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes will know this spot!

I saw her in the woods one beautiful fall day. The elegant albino doe, placidly chewing on some grass while I filmed her. She is famous in these parts. I decided to place her in a winter scene - white deer in the white snow among white birches by the light of the full moon, a nocturnal scene expressed in tones of blue. Because to me, this precious sight is as rare as a blue moon.

I just adore the white pines up here… the way they prevail, even with roots laid bare on steep shorelines… the way they carpet the forest floor with a mat of gold. A perfect backdrop for a lone mallard’s siesta.

In the fall, our lakes are lowered by three feet, exposing all the deadwood along our shoreline, much like the ocean revealing its treasures. I love studying the stumps and roots in all their different forms and times of day - they are like a gift of beautiful driftwood, and an endless source of inspiration.

Early one fall morning a dense fog lay low on the marsh while the sun was just breaking the horizon. The summer wildflowers on the berm were done for the moment. Yet the path remained inviting as ever, calling, “walk with me… together we can revel in the journey into the unknown.”

Northwoods reflections are an endless source of inspiration. I like to remind people, “look how far down you can see – to the tops of the trees!” I used orange light to express how the sun sometimes bathes the landscape in other-worldly color just before slipping away. The eagle who calls this place home is just another testament to how the wilderness of the northwoods provides nourishment for the soul.

There are rare magical days in fall when the air is perfect, the scenery is at its peak, and the world seems to come to a standstill. Or maybe it’s my heart. If only those perfect days could last forever.

On a foggy morning objects in front of you can appear sharp and clear while things beyond fade into nothingness. I especially love seeing the morning fog from our dock. It feels as though the world is holding its breath. The shoreline is lost in the mist, but the sun is mysteriously present - a ghostly reflection doing its job to reveal a bright new day.

I went to see the sun rise one still and silent September morning. Before it breached the horizon, the atmosphere was bathed in a heart-stoppingly beautiful golden glow, softly caressing the spiderwebs perched in the marsh grasses.

A heavy late spring snowstorm set these cardinals hunkering down with feathers fluffed against the unseasonable cold. I love the way the bright warm colored feathers contrast with the soft edges and cool tones of the surrounding trees. A tribute to the survival skills of our feathered friends.

Loons are one of the finest treasures of the Northwoods. To happen upon a loon’s nest while drifting along the shoreline by kayak is a rare treat. I took a quick photo and made a hasty retreat to allow the parents their privacy to tend to the eggs that would soon become fluffy brown chicks riding on their backs.

In this painting I tried to capture the sense of awe and mystery of this magical place that takes my breath away.

In summer on the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes, the early morning air is often cooler than the water, so the mist rises and becomes lit up as the sun rises. On this golden morning, the air was still and a single loon drifted into the pool of blue reflected from the clearing sky. Serendipity!

How lucky am I to live just 3 miles from this incredible sanctuary? On this evening, just after the storm ended, the clouds were still hanging so low you could almost touch them, but you could see the promise of clear skies on the horizon. I don’t know why, but the Powell Marsh looks like this almost every day! It’s just a magical place. The ceiling of flat-bottomed clouds is reflected in the still water where the protected wildlife are safe to rear their young. If you look closely, you can see a hint of the swans that raise their family there each summer.

One thing I love about the Northwoods is the way the birch trees and pines live together in an almost symbiotic relationship. Even though they are “different,” they appear to embrace their differences, and both be stronger for it. If only we all could learn something from them!

If I made a list of plants that say “Wisconsin’s Northwoods” to me, lupine would surely be in the top ten. I love how they adorn the roadsides in early summer, prompting people to take a drive just to see them. Suddenly one day - poof - they’re gone!

There is something special about getting up close and personal with water plants from a kayak. The reflections are perfect. As long as you be careful not to rock the boat! I don’t know what it is about the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, but it has hands-down the most consistently amazing skies I’ve ever seen. This dramatic sunset was a regular occurrence for us, where we had a cabin on the North end of the flowage for many years. The sunsets are one of the things I miss the most.

This is how the birch trees in front of our cabin looked in the flat light of a foggy morning. Even though it was a 4’ wide canvas I painted most of it outside with big brushes and a pallet knife to quickly capture the luminous effect of the filtered light. Now, hanging inside, it conveys almost a “glow-in-the-dark” effect.

On the North end of Manitowish Lake, the Manito Island is a familiar and beloved sight to all who enjoy the “Manitowish Chain O Lakes.” Legend holds that this little island, once connected to the mainland, holds the burial mound of a great Ojibwa Chief. On a mystical morning like this, it seems only the ancient loon can know the secrets of the past, as generation after generation, they return to their place of birth.
