16 x 20” oil on canvas

One bright summer day, while plein air painting on a dock on Rest Lake, a family of young mergansers came zooming by. I was able to quickly capture some photos before they disappeared. Back in the studio, I worked on this painting to recreate the perfect moment when these busy little birds’ energy was at one with the sparkling sunlight.

On Island Lake in Manitowish Waters, sits a small island with the tallest tree you ever saw. The white pines look soft and fluffy from afar. Two eagles claim this vantage point, where they can look down to the top of the next tallest tree. Their body feathers complement the shadows of the tree and their head feathers blend with the clouds, showing us that they are one with their world.

I can imagine a lone individual taking a walk across the ice to revel in the perfect stillness and reflect on cherished childhood memories.

Tranquility (Manito Island)

It’s a rare thing to find the water so calm around Manito Island. On this magical morning, a solitary loon seems to cherish the silence as she softly glides in and out of the rising mist.

Sunset Time Manitowish Lake

16 x 20” oil on canvas

The South shore of Manitowish Lake provides a perfect vantage point for sunset viewing. Every evening nature paints a piece of “living art” – each one as unique as it is fleeting. Capturing one on canvas helps us to enjoy it a little longer!

Manitowish River II

Living in the Moment

12 x 24” oil on canvas

Two fishermen were out on Rest Lake early one September morning when the air was cool and the water still warm, the mist lingering on the surface. In the pure silence of moments like these, time seems to stop, and “living in the moment” is so easy. I love painting these misty mornings.

Confidentially Speaking

12 x 16” Oil on canvas

Nothing can quite compare with the unconditional love of a dog. When you share your deepest feelings, they never judge. They simply accept and love you no matter what. This painting depicts a special moment between a young woman and her beloved dog.

Early Morning Fog

16 x 20 oil on canvas

Early one September morning, the Manitowish Chain of Lakes was cloaked in a thick fog rising from the warm water into the cool air. In the silent stillness, the haunting call of a single loon completed the experience, which I tried to capture in this soft misty morning painting.

A Storm is Brewing

30 x 40” oil on canvas

The drama of summer thunderheads are a sight to behold as they grow by the minute. You can feel the electricity in the air. This one, building over the Manitowish Chain of Lakes, and lit up by the setting sun, had a fleeting luminosity that I simply had to capture on canvas.

Judged “Best of Show” in the 2023 Manito Art League art show.

The Gathering Storm

30 x 40 oil on canvas

Looking to the South from our pier on Little Manitowish Lake, we were mesmerized watching the thunderheads grow by the minute while the setting sun lit everything afire. Surprisingly, when the sun dipped below the horizon, it all dissolved into nothing! This painting is all that remains to preserve that magical moment of anticipation.

Rock Solid

18 x 36” Oil on canvas

This painting depicts the foundation of life-long friendships forged in the nostalgic days of a summer camp where great boys learn to become great men. With no horizon in view, it looks as though the boys could fly over the water into the future. Yet they are solidly grounded by the rock upon which they sit, as strong as the values they share and as timeless as their bonds of friendship.

Once in a Blue Moon

11 x 14” Oil on Canvas

I saw her in the woods one beautiful fall day. The elegant albino doe, placidly chewing on some grass while I filmed her. She is famous in these parts. I decided to place her in a winter scene - white deer in the white snow among white birches by the light of the full moon, a nocturnal scene expressed in tones of blue. Because to me, this precious sight is as rare as a blue moon.

Familiar Shoreline

Powell Marsh "Road to Infinity"

20 x 20” Oil on canvas

Early one fall morning a dense fog lay low on the marsh while the sun was just breaking the horizon. The summer wildflowers on the berm were done for the moment. Yet the path remained inviting as ever, calling, “walk with me… together we can revel in the journey into the unknown.”

Shore Patrol

16 x 20”

Oil on canvas

Northwoods reflections are an endless source of inspiration. I like to remind people, “look how far down you can see – to the tops of the trees!” I used orange light to express how the sun sometimes bathes the landscape in other-worldly color just before slipping away. The eagle who calls this place home is just another testament to how the wilderness of the northwoods provides nourishment for the soul.

Burning Off the Morning Fog

12 x 16” Oil on canvas

On a foggy morning objects in front of you can appear sharp and clear while things beyond fade into nothingness. I especially love seeing the morning fog from our dock. 12 x 16” Oil on canvas

Two-Loons To-Be

9 x 12”

Oil on Gesso Board

Loons are one of the finest treasures of the Northwoods. To happen upon a loon’s nest while drifting along the shoreline by kayak is a rare treat. Paddling Donut Lake

16 x 20” Oil on Canvas

In a cove on the edge of Big Island on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage is a hidden passage to a lake inside the island. If you’re lucky enough to find it, you can paddle around its donut-shaped string bog, like a moat, marveling at the exotic plants, turtles and birds. The surrounding pines make this sacred place mysteriously still and quiet. The light is always incredible. In this painting I tried to capture the sense of awe and mystery of this magical place that takes my breath away.

Sunrise Loon

In summer on the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes, the early morning air is often cooler than the water, so the mist rises and becomes lit up as the sun rises. On this golden morning, the air was still and a single loon drifted into the pool of blue reflected from the clearing sky. Serendipity!

Manito Island

On the North end of Manitowish Lake, the Manito Island is a familiar and beloved sight to all who enjoy the “Manitowish Chain O Lakes.” Legend holds that this little island, once connected to the mainland, holds the burial mound of a great Ojibwa Chief. On a mystical morning like this, it seems only the ancient loon can know the secrets of the past, as generation after generation, they return to their place of birth.
